Road Weather Sensors utilizes the forward-scattering method for visibility measurement and weather identification

Road Weather Sensors employs the forward-scattering principle to measure the total atmospheric extinction coefficient, which is then converted into real-time visibility data. It can automatically identify five weather categories—fog, rain, snow, mixed precipitation, and clear conditions—with an identification accuracy of at least 95%. It is primarily used in road traffic management and meteorological monitoring. The device features a measurement range of up to 20 km, with controlled error margins across different intervals and a repeatability of 4% or less. It is designed to operate across a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions, offers stable power supply with low power consumption, and features a lightweight, compact design for easy field deployment.

Road Weather Sensors is an automated observation instrument designed for the transportation and meteorological sectors. It operates based on the principle of forward scattering: the device emits an infrared light source, and suspended atmospheric particles or precipitation particles cause the light to scatter. The instrument collects these scattered signals to calculate the total atmospheric extinction coefficient, subsequently outputting current visibility data. Simultaneously, it analyzes signal characteristics to classify weather phenomena. The device reliably distinguishes between fog, rain, snow, mixed precipitation, and clear conditions with an accuracy exceeding 95%. By providing continuous, standardized monitoring data, it eliminates the delays and subjective biases often associated with manual observation.

Road Weather Sensors offers a visibility measurement range of up to 20 km with a resolution of 1 meter. Error margins vary by range: within 2 km, the error is no more than 2%; between 2 km and 10 km, it is no more than 5%; and beyond 10 km, it is kept within 10%. With a measurement repeatability of 4% or less, the device ensures high data stability during long-term, continuous operation. It functions within a temperature range of -40°C to +60°C and a relative humidity range of 0% to 100%, making it capable of withstanding harsh outdoor environments, including extreme cold, high humidity, and precipitation. The device supports a 12V–24V DC power supply and consumes only 1 watt of power, making it highly energy-efficient and ideal for long-term, uninterrupted online monitoring. The device measures 610 mm × 230 mm × 360 mm and weighs no more than 10 kg. Featuring a compact design and a straightforward installation and commissioning process, it can be deployed in various locations, such as along expressways, at regional meteorological stations, or in ports. The unit operates autonomously without the need for manual oversight, providing real-time data on visibility and weather conditions. This information supports applications like road hazard warnings and the recording of meteorological observations, serving as a reliable foundation for traffic management and weather analysis.
