Negative oxygen ion powder is a special material added to spray paints, mainly composed of natural mineral powders such as tourmaline powder. Tourmaline has pyroelectric and piezoelectric properties: when subjected to temperature or pressure changes, an electric potential difference is generated between its crystals, ionizing the air and generating negative oxygen ions.
The main purpose of adding negative oxygen ion powder to spray paints is to utilize its negative oxygen ion-releasing properties to improve indoor air quality. Negative oxygen ions can react with air pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, and TVOC, decomposing them into carbon dioxide and water, thereby purifying the air.
While negative oxygen ion powder has certain effects in spray paints, its performance varies due to multiple factors. Some merchants promote its functions of releasing negative oxygen ions, purifying air, and antibacterial properties, but the actual effects are influenced by factors such as the quality of the negative oxygen ion powder, the amount added, paint construction conditions, and environmental factors. If the quality is poor or the addition amount is low, the concentration of released negative oxygen ions may be negligible, making it difficult to achieve the advertised effects. Additionally, negative oxygen ions decay during air propagation, so the effect will be diminished at a distance from the release source.
To detect the effect of negative oxygen ion powder, a Negative Oxygen Ion Monitor can be used, such as the FT-FY1 portable negative (oxygen) ion detector. It adopts a cylindrical capacitor structure capture mechanism: by applying a polarization voltage, the measured air is uniformly passed through the sensor, where small-particle-size negative ions are deflected by the electric field and captured by the acquisition plate. The charge concentration value of negative ions is calculated after processing. During use, place the detector in an environment painted with paint containing negative oxygen ion powder, select the measurement mode as needed, and read the negative oxygen ion concentration value after the data stabilizes. Comparing it with the environment without negative oxygen ion powder can roughly determine its release effect.
